Jay Hanes is dedicated to preserving and continuing the tradition of Japanese tea ritual. He creates raku chawan inspired by cultural tradition, beauty in nature, and the spirit of tea. To view either his work in pottery, his studio, or tea demonstrations, please click on a photo to link to one of the galleries. Raku pottery — You are invited to view the chawan and other ceramic items shown on these pages. Most are available for purchase unless recently sold. If you are interested in an item, please ask. Kiln and studio — The studio is in a converted stone garage at Jay’s home. He is currently working on building a kiln shed from salvaged hand-hewn Pennsylvania Dutch barn beams and used roofing tile for traditional Japanese red and black style raku kilns. These construction projects are estimated to be completed by Summer 2006. Tea demonstrations — Jay has provided demonstrations and courses in tea ritual and raku pottery for all ages. Please view some photos of settings and different participants. |
